[TFE #08] You Don't Have to Be Going Through Stuff to Go for Therapy
Let’s normalize maintenance, not just emergencies.
When people say they’re in therapy, the usual assumption is that something is wrong. The first thought will go to heartbreak, burnout, trauma, or grief. But here's the truth: therapy isn't only for when life breaks you. It's also for when you want to build a deeper relationship with yourself, grow emotionally, or simply maintain your mental hygiene.
We see doctors for check-ups, hit the gym to stay fit, and drink water because it’s good for us. So why do we wait until we’re struggling to seek therapy?
Going to therapy when everything seems “fine” is like strengthening your emotional muscles before the weight gets too heavy.
But what if you can’t afford therapy?
Let’s Be Real: Therapy Isn’t Cheap.
Between bills, responsibilities, and unpredictable life expenses, therapy can feel like a luxury. But healing shouldn’t be. Here are two affordable (or free) alternatives that are actually powerful:
1. Journaling as Self-Therapy
Sometimes, all you need is a pen, paper, and a quiet corner. Journaling helps you process your thoughts, track patterns, and reflect on what you're feeling and why. You don’t have to be a “writer.” You just have to be honest.
Try this today:
“What emotion have I been avoiding lately, and why?”
“What would I tell my younger self today?”
“Where does it hurt, and what do I need?”
Start there. Your journal doesn't judge.
2. Healing Looks Like Routine
Healing isn’t always deep crying or breakthroughs. It can look like:
Drinking water first thing in the morning
Going for walks without your phone
Saying “no” without guilt
Decluttering your space and your mind
Taking naps without shame
Talking to a trusted friend, not to vent, but to feel seen
Therapy is a tool, not the only path to healing. So if you're not ready, not sure, or just can't afford it, don’t beat yourself up. Start where you are, with what you have.
In Case No One Told You:
You are allowed to take care of your mind, even if you're not in a crisis. Healing is not a race or a dramatic comeback. Sometimes, it’s just you showing up for yourself, little by little. And that is enough.

Final Thoughts
You don’t have to be broken to begin. Sometimes, healing starts when we choose to be curious about our own hearts. Whether it’s through therapy, journaling, prayer, movement, or quiet, keep choosing yourself. You're not “too much.” You're just learning how to come home to yourself.
